Industry Spotlight - Magnesium in Motion: Driving the Future of Automotive Lightweighting hosted by the IMA
Todd Olson, CEO of Twin City Die Castings (TCDC), joined automotive engineers, researchers, and magnesium industry representatives in Livonia, Michigan, on October 12 as a featured presenter at the International Magnesium Association’s “Magnesium in Motion: Driving the Future of Automotive Lightweighting.” The one-day seminar explored the design, manufacturing, production, and supply considerations shaping the use of magnesium in vehicles. The seminar also provided valuable opportunities for attendees to exchange ideas, strengthen industry connections, and identify practical pathways for broader magnesium adoption.
TCDC was represented alongside leading organizations across the automotive and magnesium industries. The program opened with remarks from IMA Immediate Past President Hartmut Fischer, followed by a keynote from Paul Krajewski of General Motors Global Research and Development on mass decompounding lightweighting. Throughout the day, the featured speakers shared insight on EV lightweighting and global magnesium developments, real-world applications, current and emerging technologies, supply base readiness, and the engineering considerations needed to support broader magnesium adoption.
In his presentation, Todd highlighted the North American magnesium die casting industry and its capabilities, established automotive applications, and the growing supplier base equipped to produce larger magnesium castings. Drawing on TCDC’s production experience, he connected the industry’s lightweighting goals with the manufacturing capacity and expertise needed to move magnesium components from concept to production-ready castings.
TCDC is thankful for Todd’s contribution to this industry forum and his continued leadership in advancing magnesium die casting for automotive lightweighting. And, thank you to the International Magnesium Association for the opportunity, and the other presenters and attendees who contributed to the discussion about magnesium's role in automotive lightweighting.
